Semester One

Week 1

August 8th, 2016 to August 12th, 2016
Monday was the first day of school and I explored the shop with Mr. Miller and he showed my group and me the diffrent tools in the shop. On Tuesday my group and I were with Dr. Neat in the classroom. We learned more about the class and what we were going to be doing over the year. We then played a name game where we learned half the class's names. On Wednesday it was our first Wednesday Challenge. The Wednesday Challenge was the spaghetti bridge. The challenge was to build a bridge out of only spaghetti and wood glue. We continued this on to Thursday. Thursday is when we started building the bridge. Friday we learned how to make a website and began to create our very own. This is the same website you are reading right now.

Week 2

Monday, August 15th, 2016
Yesterday, August 15, we typed our first entry into our website. If you read the first entry, you already know what it is about. If you have not, It was about the first week of school. Everyday we are learning more about websites and how to make them. Dr. Neat has really helped us learn all of these things. We haved learned about tags and how to use them. We also learned how to put things into our website, like these entries.

Tuesday, August 16th, 2016
On Tuesday we did more on our website and learned some new tags important to our website creation. We learned the bold tag/ closed bold tag and the paragraph tag. We added more onto our website, mostly about what we did on Monday. This was Tuesday!!!

Wednesday, August 17th, 2016
This was Day 3 of the Spaghetti Bridge Challenge. Our group trashed our old idea and we came up with a new one. We began to work on this new bridge.

Thursday, August 18th, 2016
On Thursday I worked on my website. I came up with some writing ideas and nothing else much. This was a day meant for working on websites only.

Friday, August 19th, 2016
On Friday we worked on Spaghetti Bridges. We finally finished our first bridge and we are planning to test it the next day we continue this challenge. Mr. Miller liked our idea for th bridge and we hope that it is going to do really well. I want to really win this challenge. We are now just waiting for the glue to dry and then we will test it. We have a really good design and I think it will do very well.

Week 3

Monday, August 22nd, 2016
Today I was intoduced to Google Sketch Up. I was showed how to rotate the view and how to translate the object shown on the screen. We learned a couple of the many basic components of Google Sketch up. Even though these are small they will be very useful to me. We are later going to start learning new things about Google Sketch Up and even start to make our own creations. These creations are for our creations that we are going to build in the shop. We are going to be building many things and this will be a key factor to our creations. We basically cannot start a project without going making a design in Sketch Up. So this was a day to show us an app that we are going to use throughout the school year.

Tuesday, August 23rd, 2016
Today we learned some more about Google Sketch Up. We learned how to take a picture of what is showing on our screen. As the two you see above. So we took a picture of Leo Neat's skateboard press.

Wednesday, August 24th, 2016
Today we worked on our Spaghetti Bridge. We tested the bridge and we got a decent score of 22. To test, you put an empty jug of water, and then you slowly fill the jug with water until the bridge snaps. To calculate the score is pretty easy. All you do is measure the weight of the bridge and then measure the weight of water. Then you divide the amount of water by the weight of the bridge and then you get the score. I'm not quite sure how much our bridge weighed, but I know the water was 200 g. Testing the bridge was not a huge success and we still need to modify things to the creation. Now we are working on the next bridge. It's pretty much the same bridge, it just has a few minor adjustments.

Spaghetti Bridge Wednesday Challenge Form

Thursday, August 25th, 2016
Today we worked on our websites. We learned how to put a link into our website, such as the one for the Spaghetti Bridge Challenge Form.

Friday, August 26th, 2016
Today we met Mr. Wilton. He owns his own engineering shop and he invents creations made by him and his team. We learned that he has built camera sets for famous movies like Harry Potter.

Mr. Wilton's Webpage

Week 4

Monday, August 29th, 2016- Thursday, September 1st, 2016
On Monday we worked on our websites. We learned how to put a link to a website on our website. The link we put in was Mr. Wilton's webpage. On Tuesday was the second to last day working on our spaghetti bridge and we got all of it done. All we needed to do was to wait for the glue to dry. Wednesday was the last day to work on spaghetti bridges. We had already finished on Tuesday, so we did not have to do. Thursday was the day of testing our bridges. My group's bridge held 377 grams of water, the most in the whole class. Our bridge weighed 30 grams and that was a little to heavy. You calculate the score of the bridge determined by a ratio. It was the weight of water carried divided by the bridge weight, 377/30. We got a score of 12.56666667. We got second place in the compotition.

Week 5

Tuesday, September 6th, 2016
On Tuesday we found out our scores for the Wednesday Challenge. My group got a score of 12.566666667.

Wednesday, September 7th, 2016
On Wednesday we started our new Wednesday Challenge. The challenge was to have an idea for a machine that can tell the difference between a dog and a cat Our idea was to build a machine that scans the x-ray of the animal placed onthe platform. The machine will be programmed with a picture of the animals skeleton, so that it can tell the difference.

Dog Vs. Cat Wednesday Challenge Form

Thursday, September 8th, 2016
On Thursday we worked on our websites.

Friday, September 9th, 2016
On Friday, we talked about the CVHS Robotics Team's ideas for the JPL Invention Challenge, later in the 2016 year. There were 3 ideas. The Kevin Arm, a pump, and a tread.

Week 6

Monday, September 12th, 2016
On Monday, we learned how to use the rectangle and pull/push tool in Google Sketch Up. We had to build something only using the rectangle and the push/pull tool. I built a small building.

Tuesday, September 13th, 2016
Tuesday, we worked owith Google Sketch Up again. We practice making rectangular prisms. To practice this we used Jenga blocks. We had to put the exact measurments on the computer and we made a Jenga block block that was equivlent in real life.

Wednesday, September 14th, 2016
On Wednesday we started our Wednesday Challenge. Our challenge was to make a plywood block as close to two inches as we can. Our resouces were any resources available, except for the power tools in the shop. Our first block was one thousandth of a millimeter off and we were one of the closests group to two inches. The point of this challenge was to teach us accuracy and precision.

Thursday, September 15th, 2016
On Thursday we had to repeat the Wednesday Challenge from the day before, except without the veteran in the group. The veteran in our group was Keila, and he was the biggest contributerto our first block. After we built are second block we were one one hundreth of a millimeter off.

Wood Block Wednesday Challenge Form

Friday, September 16th, 2016
On Friday the CV Robotics team practiced using their ideas for the JPL Invention Challenge. They tested many things like the Kevin Arm and the Vaccuum. The one that worked best though was Alvin's grabby thing. He got all the water into the tube and he did it the fastest.

Week 7

Monday, September 19th, 2016
Monday, we worked with Sketch Up and Jenga Blocks. We basically had to build a structure out of Jenga Blocks and then build that on Sketch Up. My strucuture looks kinda like lower case T.

Tuesday, September 20th, 2016
On Tuesday we had someone speak to us about a program called Skillify. Skillify is a program that helps you find out what career you want to pursue in the future.

Skillify Website

Wednesday, September 21st, 2016
On Wednesday, we did a Wednesday Challenge. The challenge was to get a marble into a paper bag using multiple half tubes. You were not allowed to overlap the tubes though. My group won the challenge.

Thursday, September 22nd, 2016
On Thursday we learned how to put a video into our website. It takes many complicated steps, but the class eventually got through it. I haven't put a video into my website yet by I am hoping to in the future. We learned both the easy way and the harder way. Youtube literally has a link that you can put into your editor and the video will be put on your website.

Friday, September 23rd, 2016
The JPL team spoke to us more about their ideas for the JPL Invention Challenge.

Week 8

Monday, September 26th, 2016
On Monday we looked at examples of websites in our class. We also found out the grades of our websites. I got a total grade of 9.5 out of 10. I feel pretty good about it.

Tuesday, September 27th, 2016
On Tuesday, Dr.Neat showed us a video about an explosion with a rocket. We also worked on our websites for a little bit.

Wednesday, September 28th, 2016
On Wednesday we began to work on our Wednesday Challenge. This is the biggest Wednesday of the quarter because whichever two groups win, each person in those groups gets an A in the quarter. Our Wednesday Challenge is to build an arch bridge completely out of one material, and we cannot use any adhesives to put the pieces together. You have to keep the bridges up by force on the other blocks. The first day was basically a day to brainstorm ideas and get them approved by Dr. Neat. Our first idea was rubber bands, but we are not exactly sure how to keep the them together. Our current idea is licorice. The licorice is flexible and easy to move, so we can weave the licorice over and under each other to make a stable and long bridge.

Arch Bridge Wednesday Challenge Rules

Thursday, September 29th, 2016
Worked on our arch bridge, no new ideas came to mind.

Friday, September 30th, 2016
On Friday, the CVHS Robotics Team talked to us about their ideas on the JPL Invention Challenge.

Week 9

October 3rd, 2016- October 6th, 2016
This week we worked only on the arch bridges. We tried using paper bowls, sugar cubes, and foam blocks. The sugar cubes and the paper bowls didn't work. The foam blocks worked really well. We did not get a great score, but we got it done.

Friday, October 7th, 2016
The CVHS Robotics team talked us more about there ideas for the JPL Invention Challenge. Mr. Wilton was here.

Week 10

Monday, October 10th, 2016
On Monday we worked on Sketch Up. We reviewed by building a jenga block. We learned how to make a component and how to use the move tool. By using the tools we had to build a stairway.

Tuesday, October 11th, 2016
On Tuesday we worked with Sketch Up again and we learned how to make rouned corners on shapes.

Wednesday, October 12th, 2016
On Wednesday we did a Wednesday Challenge. The Challenge was to build a card house, with no adhesives of course. Our tallest structure turned out to be 7 inches high. There are some pictures below.

Card House Wednesday Challenge Results

Thursday, October 13th, 2016
Today we worked on our websites and made a playing card on Sketch Up.

Friday, October 14th, 2016
The CVHS Robotics team talked to us about their further progress and ran a few tests with their designs.

Week 11

Monday, October 17th, 2016
On Monday my arch bridge group went into to the shop with Mr.Miller and we started the safety course for the class.

Tuesday, October 18th, 2016
On Tuesday we worked with Sketch Up again. We built an unsharpened pencil. Here is the design.

Wednesday, October 19th, 2016
On Wednesday we started our Wednesday Challenge. Our goal was to build a perfect 90 degree angle using 3 straws. We were allowed to use any adhesives. We could pretty much use anything, except more straws.

Thursday, October 20th, 2016
On Thursday we built our 90 degree angle with straws, and it turned out that my group one, GO DODGERS!! Our strategy was that we pressed two straight metal objects together to form a 90 degree angle and we put the straws inside the 90 degree angle and then taped it.

Week 12

Monday, October 24th, 2016
On Monday we went over the Wednesday Challenge results. We all shared ou what our strategy was and what we learned from the challenge. We learned that the smaller group was more effective so we don't have to deal with people messing around.

Tuesday, October 25th, 2016
On Tuesday we worked, all day, on our websites. We finished our Wednesday Challenge Form for the 90 degree straws. We also started on a Sketch Up with Lego blocks.

Wednesday, October 26th, 2016
On Wednesday we did a Wednesday Challenge. The challenge was to estimate the total amount of candy corn it takes to completely cover an 8.5x11 inch piece of paper. We estimated 704 candy corn, but we rounded down to 700. We were off by far. The actual number was 497.

Candy Corn Wednesday Challenge Form

Thursday, October 27th, 2016
On Thursday I started to work on building a lego block in Sketch Up.

Friday, October 28th, 2016
On Friday we worked on our websites, while the CVHS Robotics Team showed us their ideas and where they are at with the JPL Invention Challenge.

Week 13

Halloween
On Halloween we were in formed by Dr. Neat about a project we were going to be working on soon. The project is about a bridge. We have to learn about the history and purpose of any bridge across the world that is approved by Dr. Neat. Later that day I went trick or treating with my friends and I got a decent amount of candy. I didn't get a lot due to a baseball practice I had.

Tuesday, November 1st, 2016
On Tuesday we worked o our websites. We made more entries and got all up to date y putting our index file into FileZilla and other things like that.

Wednesday, November 2nd, 2016
On Wednesday we started our next Wednesday Challenge. It was our first Wednesday Challenge with student judges. The judges are th people who determine who wins the Wednesday Challenge, instead of Dr. Neat. Our goal was to make a capital E in Sketch Up. After we made this the judges would get the file and move it to someone else's computer and they had to make our capital E. We then got someone else's capital E and we had to make their's.We could only use a box cutter and cardboard to make the capital E. In my group was Malik and Krish.

Card Board E Wednesday Challenge Form
Final E Results

Thursday, November 3rd, 2016
On Thursday we finished up our Wednesday Challenge, but we still don't have the results. The E we made turned out to be really small.

Friday, November 5th, 2016
On Friday the CVHS Robotics team talked to us about their ideas for the JPL Invention Challenge. The vacuum looked a little better then last week. We still haven't seen a test for the garbage truck. Sam's and Cole's device worked really well. They almost got all of the water in the cup. The Kevin Arm also worked a lot better then last we coming in second place on Friday with the second most amount of water. He got majorty of the water into the receptical.

Week 14

Monday, November 7th, 2016
On Monday we went over website grades. I got a 10.0 on the website, so now I have a 100 percent in the quarter.

Website Grades

Tuesday, November 8th, 2016
On Tuesday we worked on our websites. I put the Website Grades PDF into the website and I put the Monday entry in.

Wednesday, November 9th, 2016
On Wednesday we did a Wednesday Challenge. The challenge was to find a ratio of two objects, a block like object and a baggie full of nuts and bolts. The two objects were labeled 1kg, but one wasn't really 1kg. The baggie was less then 1kg. So we had to find the ratio of the amount of baggies to the block. The ratio was 4 to 1. Mason, Aren, and Justin were in my group.

1kg Wednesday Challenge Form

Thursday, November 10th, 2016
On Thursday the CVHS Robotics team talked to us about their ideas for the JPL Invention Challenge. It was the last time they talked to us before the challenge because the challenge is in a couple weeks. The vacuum idea worked a lot better, sucking up all the water in the cup including the fish. The garbage truck still isn't fully operational and it's going to be close, knowing how much time they have left. The slidy thingy by Sam and Cole is working cery well losing very few amounts of water and the Kevin Arm did not run any tests when we talked. It is looking very good for most of the groups.

Week 15

Monday, November 14th, 2016
On Monday we worked on our websites. I caught all up to date with my website, putting more entries in and finishing the Wednesday Challenge form for the 1kg.

Tuesday, November 15th, 2016
On Tuesday we worked on our websites. We did some updating, that's really it.

Wednesday, November 16th, 2016
On Wednesday we did another Wednesday Challenge. The challenge was to use and adhesive to hold to metal tabs together. The tabs would then be pulled away from each other until they break apart. We first used a file to make scratches in the tab, so the tabs would be able to hold on to each other. We were the first group to test our tabs and we thought we were going to do the best. Our tab held 16 pounds per square inch. But after everyone else tested, they all held the same amount of weight. Aren and Evan were in my group. Our adhesive of choice was super glue

Sheer Force Wednesday Challenge Form

Thursday, November 17th, 2016
On Thursday we found out why the tabs were holding so much weight. We found out that the sheer force of super glue is 1100 pounds per square inch. We didn't have a possible way to test that, so the people who used super glue cannot test anymore. After discussing this I went with Derek, Nicolas, and Aren into the shop. Mr. Miller told us that us four have to make something, anything, that we want, that wasn't to big. Our group decided to make a mini scooter. Other ideas brought up were a piggy bank, long board, which was declined because that is our final 4th semester, and a moving windchime.

Friday, November 18th, 2016
On Friday the CVHS Robotics Team showed us their final tests for the JPL Invention Challenge. Keila's group was diqualified. It looks the three other groups are going to JPL for the semifinals.

Week 16

Monday, November 28th, 2016
On Monday we learned how to use the rotate tool on Sketch Up. We also made a Sketch Up of our arch bridge from the first quarter.

Tuesday, November 29th, 2016
On Tuesday, the CVHS Robotics Team showed us a presentaion on the JPL Invention Challenge. Sam and Cole's team got DQed because a rope on their device got caught in the process. This stopped the device too early and they lost too much water. Jacob's vacuum also got DQed because it did not suck up enough water or the gold fish. Kevin was the only one not DQed, he just didn't make it in the top 5.

Wednesday, November 30th, 2016
On Wednesday we started a Wednesday Challenge. We had to make a tower with only graham crackers, pretzels, and marshmallows. We had to make a Sketch Up for another group to make and we had to make another groups Sketch Up. We had to rush our Sketch Up because by the time we were done doing all the measurments there was not very much time left.

Thursday, December 1st, 2016
On Thursday we continued our Wednesday Challenge. We built John's group tower and it was 2 1/2" tall. We are not yet sure who won the challenge.

MGP Tower Wednesday Challenge Form

Friday, December 2nd, 2016
On Friday, we worked on our websites and we watched Myth Busters.

Week 17

Monday, December 5th, 2016
On Monday was the first day of our final. We also found out the results of the last Wednesday Challenge. We got 3rd place and the person who built the Sketch Up we made got 1st place, so I think that means that we won the Wednesday Challenge because it was another partner group one. The good thing about the final is that it doesn't affect our grade unless we completely don't do it. We can completely fail at this challenge and we can still get a good grade in the class. Our final was the same thing the CVHS Robotics team did for the JPL Invention Challenge. We had to transport a cup of water and dump all of the water into the receptical, except ours was half the scale. So instead of transporting the cup two meters, we only had to transport it one meter. If we won this challenge then me and my group would get an A in the semester. The way to win is by getting the water into the receptical in under 18 seconds.A negative difference is that we only have 8 days to do it, while the robotics team had 3 months. That's a little unfair. My group is Artur, Derek, and Roberto. We have an idea, but we are not yet 100% sure about it yet.

Tuesday, December 6th, 2016
On Tuesday we continued on our final. We came up with another idea... well sort of. The idea was to use someone else's idea from the JPL Invention Challenge. We decided not to go with this plan though because our original idea could still get the job done and it would most likely be easier to build.

Week 18

Did not update my website this week because of finals.

Week 19

Did not update my website this week because of finals.
